Playing hockey outdoors.
October 5, 2010
“It’s too cold”. Too cold? It’s winter. It’s supposed to be cold. That’s how water turns to ice. And it’s awesome. When I was little, we played all our hockey games outdoors. They were never cancelled. Blowing snow and huge drifts in the corners resulting... [+]

Saying "You're welcome"
October 4, 2010
“You’re welcome” always follows “Thank You” or “Thanks”. Not “Yep” or “Hu huh” or however you spell it. Perhaps “No Worries” is acceptable? Though I don’t recall that being the case growing up. When in doubt, always proceed with “You’re welcome” after being thanked. It’s the easiest... [+]

Writing in cursive
October 4, 2010
In school we just called it writing, which meant it was not printing. It used to be a big deal. The moment you went from printing to writing meant you were officially growing up… and it felt good. Somewhere along the line we forgot that... [+]

Dancing as a couple
October 2, 2010
I’m not talking about slow dancing where you just wrap each other up in bear hugs and walk around in a circle for the mandatory 4 minutes of Bryan Adams “Everything I Do”. Nor am I talking about whatever it’s called when the girl turns... [+]

Using cash
October 2, 2010
Seriously, the person in front of you in line is buying a pack of gum with interac? Wait a second, I think I recognize that person… it’s EVERYONE. Cash is awesome. I don’t find many things annoying, but for some reason I find the lack... [+]

Fixing stuff
October 2, 2010
I know for a fact my Dad never took a course on how to fix rototillers or lawn mowers, yet remarkably he could repair them. Every time. We’ve had the same rototiller for over 30 years. It works just fine. We’ve had lawnmowers that looked... [+]

Hanging laundry outside
September 30, 2010
Full disclosure: Until I was well into my teens my family still washed our clothes in a wringer washer. It was the 90′s. Yep, we’re old-school. If you don’t know what that is, it’s kind of like a barrel with a couple of rolling pins on... [+]

Visiting your Grandparents
September 30, 2010
They’re nice. They have great stories. They are, most likely, far more entertaining than whatever it is you are doing when you’re not visiting them. Visit your Grandparents. It’s not even about you, but you’ll feel good about yourself for doing do. It’s a guarantee... [+]

Climbing Trees.
September 29, 2010
You were 9. There was a tree. Your first instinct: “That tree must be climbed”. Climbing trees is officially awesome. I clearly remember spotting trees in a park or in a friends yard on a visit and marvelling at how perfect it was for climbing.... [+]

"Old" names.
September 28, 2010
It’s none of my business what parents name their children. That is not the purpose of this post. It would be nice however, to see some names live on. I don’t know any two year olds names Ethel, Gertrude, or Hazel… but I do know... [+]
